Getting Started
GemID is available on iOS, Android, and in your browser. This guide walks through first launch, the free trial, creating an account, and running your first identification.
Step 1 — Open GemID
- Web: visit gemid-labs.com/app/ in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox).
- iOS: download GemID from the App Store.
- Android: download GemID from Google Play.
All platforms have identical features. The web app works offline after first load (PWA).
Step 2 — Your Free Trial
When you first open GemID, a 7-day Pro trial starts automatically — no credit card, no account required.
During the trial, all Pro features are active: nat/syn testing, report builder, examination records, treatment protocols, simulant database.
- A banner at the top of the identification screen shows how many days remain.
- Dismiss the banner anytime — your trial continues in the background.
- After the trial ends: Free tier is active. You can still identify gems. Save, nat/syn, and export require a paid plan.
Step 3 — Create an Account (Optional)
An account is not required to identify gems or use the trial.
You need an account to:
- Save sessions across devices
- Access your collection from multiple devices
- Use the Report Builder
How to sign in
Tap the person icon in the top-right corner, or go to Settings → Sign In. GemID uses magic link authentication — no password. Enter your email, then tap the link sent to your inbox.
Your data stays local by default. Identification data is stored locally on your device. Creating an account enables cloud sync. If you sign out without an account, locally saved sessions remain on your device.
Step 4 — Your First Identification
Open the Identification Screen
You'll see a list of collapsed section headers. This is Expert Mode — all 15 measurement types available at once.
Enter Visual Observations
Tap Visual Observations to expand it. Set color, transparency, and luster if known.
Watch the Results Update
The Results tab shows the candidate count updating in real time. Even visual observations narrow the field significantly.
Enter Your RI Reading
Tap Refractometer to expand it and enter your refractive index reading. The candidate list will narrow significantly.
Check the Next Test Chip
Look at the orange Next Test chip at the top of the Results tab — it tells you which measurement will be most useful to add next.
Keep Entering Measurements
Continue adding measurements. When candidates drop to 1–3, you are close to an identification.
Review the Candidate Card
Tap a candidate to see its full property card and compare it against your measurements side by side.
Understanding Modes
Expert Mode
All 15 input sections are visible as collapsible headers. An orange dot appears on sections where a measurement is recommended next. Best for gemologists who know what tests they have available and want to work in any order.
Guided Wizard
GemID asks questions one at a time and guides you through the measurement workflow in optimized diagnostic order. Best for students or anyone learning the sequence.
Switching Modes
- Tap the mode toggle in the toolbar — wand icon for Wizard, grid icon for Expert.
- Your entered measurements carry over when switching modes.
- You can switch modes mid-session without losing data.
What GemID Tells You
Results use the phrase "consistent with measured properties" — not "this is X." GemID narrows candidates based on your measurements but does not make a final determination.
For stones of significant value, confirmation by a qualified gemologist or accredited lab is always recommended.
Never say: "AI-powered," "replaces a gemologist," or "100% accurate." Always say: "consistent with," "candidates include," "indicators observed."
