Saving Sessions
Hobbyist+ Requires Hobbyist plan or active Pro trial.
GemID lets you save every identification session — preserving your entered measurements, candidate results, and notes in one place. Sessions are organized into Profiles (a folder for a client, job, or personal collection). Together, profiles and sessions turn GemID into a complete workbench record system.
Saving a Session
Complete your identification
Enter measurements on the main screen until the candidate list stabilizes. You can save at any point — you do not need a definitive result first.
Tap the Save button
Tap the Save button at the bottom of the results panel, or the floppy-disk icon in the toolbar. The Save Sheet slides up from the bottom of the screen.
Enter a label
Give the session a descriptive label — for example, "Ruby cabochon, 2.3 ct" or "Unknown red stone". This label appears in the session list and on any report generated from this session.
Select or create a Profile
Choose an existing profile from the list, or tap New Profile to create one on the spot. Profiles are like folders — one per client, job, or category.
Add optional notes
The notes field accepts free-form text: treatment history, provenance, client-supplied information, or anything else you want attached to this record.
Tap Save
The session is saved locally and synced to your account automatically if you are signed in. A confirmation briefly appears in the results panel.
What Gets Saved
Every saved session stores a complete snapshot of the identification run at the time of saving:
- All entered measurements — RI, SG, fluorescence, optical character, and every other filled field
- The full candidate list as it stood when you tapped Save
- Your label and free-form notes
- Nat/syn test results, if you ran the nat/syn protocol (Pro feature)
- Reference photo, if one was uploaded during the session
- Timestamp and a unique session ID
Snapshot behavior. Saved sessions are a point-in-time record. If you return to the identification screen and change measurements after saving, those changes are not retroactively applied to the saved session. Save again to create a new record.
Profiles
Profiles are the top-level organizer. Think of them as jobs, clients, or personal collections — one profile per context.
Creating a profile
Tap the + button on the Profiles screen (accessible via the person icon in the navigation bar or the main menu), or create a new profile inline during the Save Sheet flow.
What you see in the profile list
- Profile name
- Session count
- Job status pill (Open / Complete / Delivered)
- Job number, if set (Pro)
Opening a profile
Tap any profile row to open it and see all sessions filed under it, sorted newest first. Tap any session to view its full detail.
Job Status
Each profile carries a job status that tracks where the work stands. Set or change status via the profile's overflow menu (⋮) → Set Status.
- Open — work in progress. The default status for every new profile.
- Complete — identification work is done. Available to all Hobbyist+ users.
- Delivered — the report has been delivered to a client. Pro-only. Shows a teal "Delivered" pill on the profile card.
Job numbers are a Pro feature. Set a job number via the profile's edit screen. The number appears on the profile card and in any report header generated from sessions in that profile.
Viewing Saved Sessions
Open any profile to see its session list. Tap a session row to open the full detail view, which shows:
- All entered measurements
- The candidate list at time of save
- Nat/syn results, if present
- Your notes
- Session timestamp and label
Actions on a session
- Open in identification screen — reload this session's measurements to continue working
- Share as card image — export a summary card image via the share sheet
- Send to Report Builder — tap the overflow menu (⋮) → Build Report to open the Report Builder pre-loaded with this session
- Delete — swipe left on the session row, then tap Delete. A confirmation prompt appears before the session is removed.
Collection Statistics
Hobbyist+
From any profile, tap the chart icon or the Stats option in the overflow menu to open Collection Statistics for that profile.
What the stats screen shows
- Pie chart — sessions grouped by gem color category
- Bar chart — top species by session count
- Total session count and overall identification rate
Badges
GemID awards badges for identification milestones — for example, "First 10 identifications", "Ruby confirmed", or "Nat/Syn protocol completed". Earned badges appear on the stats screen. Tap any badge to see its criteria and whether it has been earned.
Share card
Tap the share icon on the stats screen to export a collection summary card image. Useful for sharing your collection progress or presenting a portfolio overview to a client.
Sync and Backup
Sessions are designed to be durable and available across devices.
- Offline-first — sessions save to local storage immediately. No internet connection required to save.
- Automatic sync — when you are signed in and online, sessions sync to Firestore in the background.
- Cross-device — sign in on a second device and your sessions appear automatically.
- Sign out behavior — sessions remain on the device when you sign out. They are not deleted.
Important. If you clear app data or uninstall GemID without a signed-in account, locally saved sessions are permanently lost. Create an account to ensure your sessions are backed up to the cloud and recoverable on any device.
