Malaya / Umbalite Garnet
Malaya (or Umbalite) garnet is a pyrope-spessartite solid solution from the Umba River Valley of Tanzania and Kenya, prized for its peachy orange-pink to red-orange color with vitreous to adamantine luster.

Key Differentiators
- Peachy orange-pink color unusual in the gem world — distinct from orange sapphire and padparadscha
- Isotropic (SR) — no birefringence, no pleochroism; padparadscha sapphire is birefringent (DR)
- High RI (1.730–1.780) places it above most garnets except andradite
- Mn absorption bands visible in spectroscope (spessartite component)
- Variable composition: RI and SG shift with pyrope/spessartite ratio
- Moderate magnetic response — pyrope/spessartite/almandine components all contain paramagnetic Fe²⁺ or Mn²⁺
Common Simulants
- Padparadscha Sapphire: Sapphire is birefringent (DR, uniaxial negative), RI 1.762–1.778, SG 3.99–4.01; much higher SG and RI than Malaya garnet; strong pleochroism (orange/pink).
- Orange Sapphire: Uniaxial negative DR, RI 1.762–1.778, SG ~4.00; birefringent (0.008); pleochroic orange/yellow-orange. Higher RI and SG distinguish from Malaya garnet.
- Spessartite Garnet: Same species family but pure spessartite is more orange and has RI 1.790–1.820, SG 4.12–4.20; higher RI and SG than Malaya/pyrope-spessartite mix.
- Hessonite Garnet (grossular): Grossular garnet, RI 1.740–1.745, SG 3.57–3.73; typically more orange-brown; roiled 'heat-wave' treacle inclusions; lower RI and SG than Malaya.
- Orange Glass: Isotropic but SG 2.3–4.5 variable; gas bubbles and swirl marks under loupe; low thermal conductivity (warm to touch); no Mn absorption bands.
