API Terms of Service
1. Acceptable Use
You may use the GemID API to build applications, integrations, and tools that interact with the GemID gem database and identification engine. By accessing the API you agree to the following restrictions:
- Do not use the API to systematically scrape, mirror, or reproduce the GemID gem database in bulk for purposes outside your application's ordinary operation.
- Do not attempt to circumvent rate limits, reverse-engineer authentication mechanisms, or probe for security vulnerabilities.
- Do not use automated clients to generate requests beyond your tier's published rate limits.
- Do not use the API in any application that facilitates fraud, deception, or misrepresentation of gem identity or provenance.
- Do not resell raw API access as a standalone data product without a written agreement with GemID Labs.
Rate limits are enforced per API key. Current limits are published in the API documentation. Exceeding your tier's limit will result in HTTP 429 responses until the window resets.
2. Accuracy and Limitations
The GemID identification engine applies property-based filtering — refractive index, specific gravity, optical character, fluorescence, and related measurements — to return candidates consistent with the observations you supply. Results are expressed as "consistent with," "indicators observed," or "candidates include."
API results are not gem certifications, laboratory identifications, or appraisals. GemID Labs makes no warranty, express or implied, regarding the accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose of any identification result. Results should be interpreted by a qualified gemologist and do not substitute for professional assessment, laboratory grading, or USPAP-compliant appraisal.
Gem property data in the database is sourced from published gemological literature and is subject to natural variation. GemID Labs does not guarantee that database values reflect all known specimens or trade materials.
3. API Keys
API keys are issued per user account and are non-transferable. You are responsible for keeping your key confidential. Do not embed API keys in publicly accessible client-side code, public repositories, or shared environments without access controls.
If you believe your key has been compromised, revoke it immediately via Settings → Developer in the GemID app and generate a replacement. GemID Labs is not liable for usage charges or data exposure resulting from key compromise due to your own disclosure.
Each key is bound to the subscription tier of the issuing account. Capabilities available through the key update automatically if your subscription tier changes.
4. Key Revocation
GemID Labs reserves the right to revoke any API key, with or without notice, for:
- Violation of these terms or the general GemID Terms of Service.
- Abusive request patterns, sustained rate limit violations, or denial-of-service behavior.
- Use of the API in ways that harm the service, other users, or the integrity of the gem database.
- Account subscription lapse or termination.
- Legal obligation or regulatory requirement.
Where practical, GemID Labs will provide advance notice of revocation via the email address associated with your account. In cases of active abuse, revocation may occur immediately.
5. No Warranty
The GemID API is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. GemID Labs does not warrant that the API will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. To the fullest extent permitted by law, GemID Labs disclaims all implied warranties including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
In no event shall GemID Labs be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the API, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
6. Changes to These Terms
GemID Labs may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the API after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. Material changes will be announced via the email address on your account when practicable.
